Gaze softly upon our stoic visage
And wonder at the long stillness that
Created our lichen-adorned look;
But think not that this is endurance.
For once we were a part of a massive collective
Residing far inland and reaching toward the sky.
Mavericks and gypsies we were at heart,
Awakened by the enticing sea-energy bubbles that periodically drifted
our way.
We made the choice and surrendered to the great glacial journey,
Breaking away from the family to answer the call.
Endurance is the shape-shifting journey itself,
The breaking down, the tumbling, the bruises, the marks that places left
on us.
Malcontents we remained. Not satisfied to rest
In the bosom of our new love, we reached into the dreams of humans,
Seeking aid to become the sentinels you see before you.
We provided the images, the understanding of balance
To create a frame through which all could glimpse the magic of this place
And share the joy of our love.
Look at us; look through us.
We are not so different from you for we too are inner explorers.
Know us and know the possibility of how far we have come.
